The moment you launch it, you can see that the latest security suite from Kaspersky Labs is very different from last year's edition. The main screen is more attractive, more streamlined, and much better organized. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 ($79.95 for 3 licenses) also includes significant internal changes, among them a totally revamped antivirus engine and a new application filter feature that protects your computer by controlling access rights for applications. Still, some of the secondary abilities of the suite, such as spam fighting and parental controls didn't wow me. The result is a suite that is definitely improved, but that still leaves room for further improvement.  The main window divides the product's protection into four categories: Anti-Malware, System Security, Online Security and Content Filtering. That's a lot easier to swallow than the eight categories in the previous version. A large status bar at the top displays overall program status. Green means you're fully protected. If anything's not right, the bar turns yellow or red (depending on the severity of the problem) and flashes briefly for attention. Clicking the bar brings up a list of tasks you need to perform to get yourself back into the green, much like clicking the "Fix Now" button in Norton Internet Security 2008.  KIS2009 does its best to avoid annoying the user with incomprehensible popup queries. After all, security software ought to be more qualified than most users to make decisions about security problems! In its default configuration, virtually all of Kaspersky's protective services take action automatically, with no action required from the user. A small alert window reports what action was taken, but it evaporates after a short while. Symantec, Panda, and a few others take a similar approach—I definitely approve.

The story unfolds in four Acts, one for each major town. Address History
You may setup the Address History to keep track of people you are messaging with. Upgraded Text Editor
The MicroEd text editor is improved. Now it supports Unicode and all the available system fonts. You have the possibility to use different fonts for different elements of the message and benefit of the system-wide drag-and-drop option. We also added the Redo function and spell checking for multiple languages at once. Text search is equipped with new options. Message signature is highlighted.

Easier Support and Maintenance
The Bat! now sets %EMAIL% environment variable to its mail directory (where mail accounts and address books are kept on disk). You can now type %EMAIL% in the address location of Windows Explorer to quickly to The Bat! mail directory. This significantly simplifies technical support: the user is easily able to locate the mail directory right from Windows Explorer, regardless whether this directory in “Program Files” or “User’s data” folder, even if the user doesn’t exactly know where the mail directory actually is.

Capitalization of the Addressees’ Name
The first character is of the addressee’s name is automatically capitalized if the recipient is specified by e-mail only. For example, if you specify only "stefan@ritlabs.com" in the "To:" line of a new message, it will now put "Hello Stefan," in the message text, and not "Hello stefan," as before. This is because of the new algorithm of %TOFName and related macros.

Advanced Image Viewer
The internal image viewer allows viewing all attached images in selected messages, navigating between images. It supports rotate, advanced resize and zoom algorithms and full screen mode. It now also supports JPEG images with 4-component color schemes (CMYK and YCCK). Such JPEG files can also displayed as embedded images of HTML messages.

Improved Speed
Message list sorting by "From", "To" or "Subject" column is now five times faster. The Bat! should also consume less memory because of fixed memory leaks.

Support of TNEF Format
Some attachments in a message forwarded from Outlook were neither visible nor accessible from The Bat!, because Outlook uses its own (TNEF) format for encapsulating attachments. These messages did contain winmail.dat or message.att file rather than the actually attached files.
The Bat! currently support extraction of regular files. TNEF can also include nested binary (Outlook IMessage) messages, Outlook meeting requests, Outlook delivery reports, and so on. Such binary Outlook objects are not yet extracted.

Smart Security Buttons
The buttons that appear in the header panel when you see a PGP or S/MIME message now display multiple properties of a message. For example, when a message is signed and encrypted, you will see a single button that combine both “signature” and “encryption” images.
The menu of this button works smarter: it shows the whole list of security actions available on this message (e.g. decrypt, show signature details, import certificate, etc). The most important action is marked by the bold font style. If you click the left mouse key on this security button, this important action is executed. If the message has more than one important action, the left mouse key then invokes the pop-up menu to give the user choice: which of the important actions to perform.

WinRAR is a powerful archive manager. It can backup your data and reduce size of email attachments, decompress RAR, ZIP and other files downloaded from Internet and create new archives in RAR and ZIP file format.

Archive file formats supported are ZIP, RAR, ACE, CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, BZ2, UUE, JAR, ISO, 7Z and Z.

Changes in Version 3.80:
1. Added support for ZIP archives containing Unicode file names in UTF-8 format. When creating ZIP archive, WinRAR stores names in Unicode only if they cannot be stored correctly using the current single byte character set.
2. Added decompression support for WinZip AES encrypted ZIP archives.
3. Improved Unicode support for RAR and ZIP archive names.
4. "Ask before overwrite" and "Skip existing files" update modes are now available in archiving dialog. They allow to specify WinRAR behavior when updating already existing files in archive. Unlike already available "Fresh existing files only" and "Add and update files", these new modes ignore file date and compare only file names.

Command line equivalents of these modes are:
a) switch -o enables "Ask before overwrite" archiving mode;

8. WinRAR "Extraction path and options" dialog is now resizable. You can use the mouse to drag its border to the desired size and provide more space for folder tree pane. WinRAR will store new dimensions of this dialog.

You pick a profession and get to work earning a meager living. The majority of professions are related to craftsmanship, such as carpentry, masonry, and blacksmithing. When you have a bit of money, you can choose to make a name for yourself by courting a spouse and running for public office. The former is a simple task, requiring you to send the occasional gift and hope your chosen mate doesn’t get married before she accepts your proposal. Once you’re hitched, you and your significant other will produce offspring who can assume your responsibilities after your demise, provided you set aside some money for them and make sure they are educated.
Running for office is more complicated than marrying. First, there must be a position for which you are qualified. The positions follow a pyramid: You must start at the base and then work your way to the top. How a particular position is selected varies from job to job, but it inevitably involves being well liked by the right people. You must pay close attention and make sure you are in good favor with those who make the decisions. You can gain favor by buying special items and throwing parties at your home, provided you have built a room in which to entertain. You can also find ways to sabotage those who don’t like you, such as by publicly insulting them, hiring thugs to thrash them in the street, or having them thrown in jail. Once you secure a public office, you can then attempt to have your enemies fired and your friends hired, which helps as you ascend in rank and reap its associated monetary benefits.
Europa 1400 becomes exponentially more complicated as it goes along. As you expand your shop, or open new ones, you’ll make more money and produce better items, but you’ll also have added responsibilities. You can choose a new career at any point, and later in the game you can become a moneylender or purchase raw-goods shops, from which you can obtain cheaper materials for your prime goods, and you can even train mercenaries to waylay your competitors’ trading carts.
In fact, you can base your entire career around being a general nuisance, robbing and blackmailing and sabotaging your fellow citizens. If you choose to be a thief at the beginning, your game will be slightly different. The thieves’ guild doesn’t produce items, though you can cart your ill-gotten goods to the market. Instead, you hire thieves who go out and pickpocket the civilians. You can scout homes and shops and then rob them once you’ve gathered enough information. Once you’ve expanded your guild, you can kidnap the well-to-do and hold them for ransom. Thieving is one of the quickest ways to get rich in the game, and it makes for a nice break from the otherwise standard make-and-sell formula of the other professions.
What’s most surprising is that the game is so much more high-tech than it needs to be–a game like this would typically consist of a series of static menus and would work just fine. But Europa 1400 has a full 3D engine, allowing you to zoom around the town, watch your workers as they go about their business, and explore the many shops and services the town provides. It looks good, and the game cycles from day to night and even has changes in weather. It sounds good too, with helpful spoken advice and suitable music.
If the game has a major flaw, it’s the combat. Occasionally, your shipments will get attacked by marauders, and, provided you’ve hired an escort, you’ll have to fight. The combat is in real time and is very basic. It is also, luckily, sporadic–full games can go by without a single attack.
There’s a great deal to do in Europa 1400, and you can choose to take part in all of it or just concentrate on the areas you like best. Because of all the options, it can be a different experience every time you play. Unfortunately, the early game can get repetitive after just a few games. But the mid- to late-game is involving and addictive every time. Europa 1400 has something to offer fans of almost any genre–it’s the sort of creative hybrid that computer gaming sorely needs.
